Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team While Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Returning head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Doris in his Ireland team for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy is absent.
Doris, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the first Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Northern province player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are not included because of injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation after the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop McCarthy - the brother of Joe - is the only uncapped member in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities states new provincial pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "reserves".
After facing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous encounter, Ireland host Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, back to national team duties after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting fly-half position. The fly-half role is remains available, as Prendergast and Crowley poised to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.
Frawley is the additional number 10 chosen as the coach deciding not to selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of midfield options. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is also a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.
Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches this season and featured in the second string's loss by the English in the English city previously.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a international appearance.
Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who started each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is set to deputise for Doris should the skipper fails to recover full fitness in time to play New Zealand.
The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Monday before traveling to the US on the following day.
