Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the former director has denied the charges to providing misleading information to US legislators and obstructing a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's lawyer entered the response acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

The defense lawyer declared he would attempt to have the case dismissed for multiple reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was indicted soon after Donald Trump pushed his attorney general to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

During the hearing on Wednesday, his attorney the legal representative informed the magistrate they aimed to submit several motions to dismiss the case before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a federal prosecutor was unlawfully designated to handle the proceedings.

James Comey's case was first managed by the original attorney, who resigned under influence from the former president after his probe into another political adversary - the New York official - failed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey came across in good spirits as he entered the court on Wednesday, speaking with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his spouse, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a US lawyer who the previous administration dismissed.

Following the reading to the judge state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in the courtroom on mid-week, Mr Comey was inquired if he understood the accusations.

"I do your honour. Thank you very much," he stated to the court.

Previous Events

James Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's first administration as national leader. At the time, Mr Comey was overseeing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.

During his tenure, James Comey sparked a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating political contender the candidate's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against the candidate were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from conservative politicians as well.

Present Charges

Government attorneys claim the former director provided false information to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the Clinton investigation as well as the election interference investigation. They claim he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not authorized someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to leak to news outlets information about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and delay" the panel by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media James Comey posted to his social media after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and accused Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"Our household have been aware for years that there are ramifications to standing up to Mr Trump," he commented. "We refuse to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a court case."

These allegations against Mr Comey came after the former president published on social media demanding his top legal official, the attorney general, take legal action against James Comey and other people.
